Making Space
Making Space
PROJECT INFORMATION +
Making Space tells the story of women architects in New Zealand and their push to make space for themselves in the male-dominated profession. The idea of ‘Making Space’ was encapsulated in multiple ways through the gridded system of the title to the cover showing letters pushed out and disrupted leaving gaping spaces.
The grid creates large left hand margins with text pushed out, creating space. Headings hang with airy spaces, a sense of a pause. The challenge to create a feeling of space with the archival nature of the content.
Pink, used to illustrate growth, transitioning to a bold red, a story of the progression as pioneers came out from the shadows. A pink grid was used as a graphic feature throughout the book. With a uniform typographic approach with a single weight of Neue Haas Grotesk in only one weight to reflect the integrity and discipline of the architect.
